My Process:

This is a replica of an existing basilica designed by Angelo Italia in the 17th century representing Sicilian Baroque architecture. Most of the church was destroyed in an earthquake and this facade specifically was redesigned and constructed by Stephano Ittar and finished in 1768.

I am inspired by Baroque architecture in the way it takes classical architecture principles and adds dramatic curvature and intricate ornamental facades to increase emotional appeal and visual interest. I approached this project by researching the building and its construction while compiling reference images for my modelling process. I ended up having to find it on google earth to really understand its 3d presence to create the most accurate replica possible.

As the goal was to physically print this model out, I approached it differently to my previous architectural works. I knew that the replica itself had to be one solid piece in order for it to function as this framed wall piece. Additionally, I was limited by the fact that the replica couldn't feature any overhangs in the railing or columns. This added an extra challenge as each part of the building needed to extrude all the way to the back of the frame. For this reason the railing and pillars are all solid pieces extruded into the frame.
